Biography

Hiawasi is a contemporary Cherokee Nation artist based in Dallas, Texas. Born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, she creates original acrylic paintings on canvas, wood panels, and stone that celebrate the beauty of the natural world while honoring Cherokee culture, language, and tradition. Her work is rooted in the belief that every living being—from the smallest insect to the tallest tree—deserves reverence, compassion, and gratitude.

An enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation, Hiawasi comes from a family with generations of enrolled citizens and artists. She began painting at the age of 13 and studied the foundations of art through high school courses in color theory, figure drawing, perspective, composition, and observational drawing before continuing to refine her practice as a largely self-taught artist. In 2024, she entered her first professional exhibition and competition, and her paintings have since been featured in Cherokee Nation exhibitions, where they found homes with collectors.

Inspired by native plants, wildlife, waterways, and the quiet rhythms of nature, Hiawasi's paintings invite viewers to experience the world through a Cherokee perspective—one that values balance, stewardship, and a profound respect for the earth.
