An Honorary Tribute to Indigenous Women
“She Who Sees Beyond” is my artistic tribute to Indigenous women who have passed on—a work created from a place of honor, remembrance, and respect. She is adorned with flowers and feathers, representing, within my artistic vision, love, protection, peace, and the gentle sending forth of a woman on her journey beyond this life.
Her red garment represents strength, courage, life, and the enduring spirit of Indigenous women—an artistic expression of the resilience and dignity I wish to honor through her.
Her turquoise squash blossom necklace represents protection, beauty, strength, and a continuing connection to the natural world. Inspired by the deep cultural presence of turquoise and Southwestern Native jewelry traditions, I use the necklace as a precious adornment accompanying her on her journey.
The land surrounding her is central to the piece. It represents the enduring relationship between people, ancestors, spirit, and the earth—reflecting my artistic understanding of land as something more profound than a backdrop: a place of memory, belonging, connection, and continuity.
This piece is an offering of respect—for the women who came before, for the traditions and stories they carried, and for the enduring connection between woman, spirit, and land.
Printed signature on the front; personally hand-signed by Hiawasi on the reverse.
